Ohio Becomes the 24th State to Legalize Recreational Marijuana

11/10/2023

Ohio has made a monumental leap towards progressivism, becoming the 24th state to legalize recreational marijuana. In a democratic exercise that saw a majority of Ohio voters approving Issue 2, individuals aged 21 and above can now legally use, cultivate, and sell marijuana under a state-imposed regulation and taxation system. This new law will take effect in a month, indicating the state's resolve to regulate marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol.

The "green wave," as many have called it, has been growing across the nation, with medical marijuana already legal in Ohio since 2016 and more than three dozen other states. But Ohio's recent decision is part of a broader trend towards legalizing recreational use, a movement that is gaining traction even in traditionally conservative areas.

Despite opposition and fear-mongering advertisements suggesting that legalization will lead to children's exposure to marijuana edibles, the ballot measure succeeded. This victory suggests that Ohioans are ready to embrace a more reasonable and humane approach to marijuana policy.

While the federal government still considers marijuana possession a crime, President Biden's recent pardons for prior offenses of simple marijuana possession and the Justice Department's laissez-faire approach in states where marijuana is legal suggest an increasingly tolerant federal stance. Furthermore, the recent recommendation by the Department of Health and Human Services for the Drug Enforcement Administration to "reschedule" marijuana indicates a potential reduction in future restrictions, though very little has been done to make this fever dream a reality.

However, Ohioans must remember that the legalization of marijuana comes with regulations and responsibilities. The age restriction, clear taxation guidelines, and the potential for federal law conflicts are significant considerations. Nonetheless, this momentous decision marks a significant shift in Ohio's stance on marijuana, paving the way for a more compassionate, equitable, and sensible approach to drug policy.
