Crista Eggers, a passionate advocate from Gretna whose son suffers from severe epileptic seizures, has led the charge for over a decade. Following the vote, Eggers expressed her deep gratitude and relief, acknowledging the tireless work of caregivers, educators, and advocates who championed the cause. “I don’t think there are words to describe what tonight feels like after more than a decade of patience of caregivers, fighting and educating and advocating for cannabis access for their loved ones,” she shared. “To see all of that to be on the ballot and for Nebraskans to finally have their voice heard – I don’t know if there are words.”
Getting these measures on the ballot was no easy feat. Advocates with Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana had to undertake a rigorous, months-long petition drive, gathering over 230,000 signatures across the two initiatives. However, despite the overwhelming voter support, the future of the initiatives is not entirely secure. On Monday, just before the election, Lancaster County District Court Judge Susan Strong reviewed allegations that some signatures may have been tainted. If proven, these claims could potentially invalidate the results if roughly 3,500 signatures are disqualified.
Judge Strong is expected to rule soon, with both sides urged to file briefs quickly to allow the Nebraska Supreme Court time to handle an anticipated appeal before the results are certified on December 2. The question of legitimacy surrounding the signatures remains a concern, but organizers remain hopeful. They argue that the widespread support from voters underscores Nebraskans’ desire for change, hoping that the court will honor the will of the people.
